Swimmer Darren Mew sets British record for second time

At 30, Darren Mew is still aiming for the 2012 Olympics

Darren Mew has smashed the British long course 50m breaststroke record for a second time at the Plymouth Leander Open at the weekend.

The 30-year-old regained a record that he first broke 12 years ago and held until 2002, when it was taken by James Gibson, with a time of 27.44 secs.

"Age is just a number. This is the beginning and not the end, there is definitely more to come," he said.

Mew is hoping to represent Great Britain at the London Olympics in 2010.

Having already competed at two Olympic Games, eight World Championships, three Commonwealth Games and six European Championships, Mew - who coaches the Ellesmere Titans club - is one of the oldest swimmers competing on the world stage.

He also swam the race suffering from a chest infection and with his shoulder heavily taped as a result of an injury he recently picked up at the European Short Course Championships in Istanbul.
