Cook faces a race to get back to competition-level fitness |
Double Commonwealth champion Chris Cook hopes to be fit for the European Championships in Hungary at the end of the month after recovering from injury. The 27-year-old, who won the 50m and 100m breaststroke in Melbourne, is back in action after a groin injury but faces a race to make up for lost time.
"I'm confident it's healed but I've lost three to four weeks' training and race preparation," he said.
"I'm not going to give up and I'll be there in Budapest."
Cook and coach Ian Oliver have used the time out from training to look at other ways of improving his fitness.
"It's about taking the positives out of every situation and I've been pleased with the work I've been able to concentrate on away from my injury," he said.
"We've been working on my pull through the water as well as other areas that can sometimes become neglected.
"Injuries force you to take a big step back to analyse things and that's what's happened these past four weeks."
Cook's possible return to competition will be a boost for the British team.
Fellow Commonwealth champion David Davies is still a fitness doubt after undergoing surgery on an infected foot in May.
