Matthew was the top seed and is ranked number two in the world |
Britain's Nick Matthew won his first ISS Canary Wharf Classic title on Friday, beating Frenchman Gregory Gaultier in the final 3-1. World number two Matthew, 29, completed his victory in 69 minutes in a match that included two tie-breaks. The top seed eventually triumphed 12-10, 6-11, 13-11 and 11-3. Matthew showed few signs of fatigue despite his epic two-hour semi-final with fellow Yorkshireman James Willstrop the previous evening. Gaultier, the second seed, blamed tiredness for letting slip a 6-2 lead in the third game. And Matthew ran out an easy victory in the fourth as the Frenchman's challenge wilted.
