Matthew's victory gave him his 12th career PSA World Tour title |
Nick Matthew has beaten world number one Ramy Ashour to win the North American Open in Richmond, Virginia. The 29-year-old came back from 9-7 down in the first game and 7-4 in the second to win them 11-9 16-14 before Ashour retired at 5-4 down in the third. Sheffield's Matthew, the world number two, had lost his previous four matches against the 22-year-old Egyptian. "It's a strange feeling right now - you feel you should be happy. It's never nice to win like that," said Matthew. "All credit to Ramy - you could see he wasn't moving well. But to come through as far as he did was amazing - I don't think anyone else in the world would have been able to do that." Ashour said: "Nick played a terrific match and was a lot better than I was."
