Simpson won the British Under-23 Squash in April |
Guernsey squash player Chris Simpson has been left disappointed after the cancellation of the African Open. The event in Nigeria was due to take place next week, but the two major sponsors unexpectedly pulled out. Simpson told BBC Guernsey that the cancellation was a blow both in terms of finance and rankings. "It's a double kick because not only are we not getting our ranking points, we're also not getting our money, which is our living," Simpson said. The world number 42 had been reassured by the sports governing body that the worst effects of the world economic downturn have already been felt by the sport. But the cancellation of the African event suggests that financial problems are still being experienced.
