Wigginton Squash Club are 13 points clear at the top of the Yorkshire Squash Premiership after seven games.

The club are aiming to take the title for the third time in eight years and are well on course after 5-0 victories over both Harrogate and Heaton.

Team manager Ian Tooms said: "We've got a really settled team now, with two professionals from Manchester who've played for us for the last four years."

Tooms is proud that the other three first-choice players are local.

The club's number three is 18-year-old local boy Neil Cordell.

"He's been playing at Wigginton since he was four years old... he's gone to be a full-time PSA pro this year, that's really the success story of the whole team," Tooms added.

Number four is Matt Lowery and the number five is Johnny Duffield who has been at the club since he was six.

Tooms also gives credit to his two professionals Andy Whipp and Pete Bilson who are teaching pros.

Despite their contribution, Tooms said that in the long-term the club's aim is to have a totally local team.

The club have thriving ladies and junior sections, and are keen to expand the racket ball game, a less physically demanding game than squash which is accessible to older players.
