The 53-year-old Belfast-born legend, scheduled to compete in the Benson & Hedges Championship at Mansfield on 23 October, has entered the Embassy World Championship. The chances of Higgins returning to the Crucible Theatre next April are remote but his entry for the World Championship is certain to cause a stir. Higgins won the second of his two world crowns 20 years ago on an emotional night in Sheffield. However, it is eight years since he played at the Crucible and he will probably need to win 12 qualifying matches in order to book a return visit. The World Snooker Association have confirmed they have received an acceptance form from Higgins and are now awaiting his 200 entry fee. The first qualifying round takes place in Harrogate next month.
However the identity of his first world championship opponent since losing 5-1 to Darren Limburg in the 1996-97 qualifiers remains unknown as the draw has yet to be made. Seven-times world champion Stephen Hendry has no complaints about Higgins attempting a comeback. The Scot, who once lost a major final with Higgins hopping round the table on one leg because of a broken ankle, says: "Some players should remember this game wouldn't be where it is but for Alex Higgins. "It's obvious the guy is pretty much down and out but at least he should be allowed one more chance of glory. "He won't win the match but all credit to him for having a go." | See also: 03 Oct 02 | Snooker 02 Oct 02 | Snooker 02 Oct 02 | Snooker Top Snooker stories now: Links to more Snooker stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
