Wright has won two World Cup regattas this year |
British Finn sailor Ed Wright and the match-racing crew of Lucy Macgregor won silver medals in their respective European Championships. Wright, 32, held onto second place overnight with a third in the medal race at the Finn Europeans in Croatia. Macgregor, with crew Annie Lush and Ally Martin, lost 3-1 to Russia in the final of the women's match-racing Europeans in Hard, Austria. "Considering where I was at the start of the week I'm happy," said Wright. The 2006 Finn European champion, who sails in the same class as triple Olympic champion Ben Ainslie, finished 10th, 11th, 10th in his first three races in light winds before fighting his way back through the fleet. He began Sunday's double points-scoring medal race two points behind Spain's Rafael Trujillo but the leader struggled to seventh in the final race to finish fourth overall. Defending champion and local favourite Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic took second in the medal race to finish on equal points with Wright but won gold by virtue of his position in the last race. Briton Giles Scott also made it into the final 10-boat showdown and finished seventh overall, while Mark Andrews and Andrew Mills ended their European campaigns in 14th and 17th places respectively. | 606: DEBATE |
Sailing in Scholtz 22s instead of the Olympic class Elliot 6m, Macgregor's crew beat Greece's Sofia Bekatorou and Denmark's Lotte Meldgaard in the knockout stages to set up the final, but lost out by just a foot in the decisive race. "It's fair to say we never really made friends with these boats and we did not really sail to the best of our ability which is disappointing in the short term," said Macgregor. "But finishing second at the European Championships when we are not on form is not too bad a result."
