British trio claim golds at Sailing World Cup series

Paul Brotherton and Mark Asquith celebrate gold

Britain enjoyed a productive day as they clinched three gold medals on the final day of the fourth sailing World Cup series event in France.

Light winds prevented windsurfer and overnight leader Bryony Shaw from competing, but she claimed her second successive World Cup podium finish.

Paul Brotherton and Mark Asquith held on to their overnight lead for their first 49er win for six years.

And Paul Goodison won the Laser class medal race with a 14-point margin.

Goodison, the 2008 Olympic, world and European gold medallist was one point behind series leader Javier Hernandez before the start of the race.

But the 32-year-old won his first World Cup event of the year with a superb performance.

With the points margin, all we had to do was stay close to the competition and it panned out pretty well

"The racing here has been quite tricky all week with the light winds - a lot of sitting around and waiting, but I think we've dealt with that quite well and have come away with the result we were after," he said.

Brotherton and Asquith, reacquainted after a six-year hiatus, started their final race with an eight-point margin over their nearest rivals Nico Delle Karth and Nikolaus Resch.

Although the British duo finished ninth in the final race, the Austrian duo could only finish two places ahead and had to settle for silver.

"It wasn't until it had been confirmed that [the win] felt good, but until that point we were on edge!" said Asquith.

"With the points margin, all we had to do was stay close to the competition and it panned out pretty well."

There were more medals for Britain as Charlotte Dobson won silver in the Laser Radial class following victory in the final race.

Dobson had been fourth going into the last day but produced a fine performance to grab her first podium finish at a World Cup event since taking silver at the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta in 2008.

British development squad 49er duo Dave Evans and Ed Powys just missed out on a medal, finishing in fourth.

Elsewhere on the final day, Ed Wright finished sixth in the Finn fleet, with John Gimson and Ed Greig also sixth in the Star class.
