Goodison defends Euro Laser crown

Goodison has hit a rich vein of form in 2009

British Olympic champion Paul Goodison has clinched his fifth straight European Laser title in Sweden.

The Rotherham sailor showed his class as he bounced back from a first-race disqualification to claim overall victory after six days of racing.

The Skandia Team GBR sailor is now unbeaten on the international circuit since winning gold in Beijing.

"I didn't sail that well today, but I'm pretty chuffed and it's great to be European champion again," he said.

Goodison heads out to Canada next week in preparation for the World Championship, where he hopes his winning form will continue.

"Since coming back from the Games, the Worlds has been the one win I've really wanted and the whole year has been geared towards preparing for that," he added.

"Although I can't go there thinking that the title's mine, I'm pretty happy with the way I'm sailing so there's no reason not to be confident of doing well there."

Lymington's Nick Thompson also scored a top-five finish in Landskrona.

Also in Sweden, Britain's John Gimson and Ed Greig finished their first-ever Star World Championship in 29th place out of 86. American duo George Szabo and Rick Peters took the title in Varberg.
