ABN Amro One breezed into Rio de Janeiro early on Saturday to claim the fourth and longest leg of the Volvo Ocean Race. The 70-foot yacht drifted across the line about 60 miles ahead of Pirates of the Caribbean after 20 days and 6,700 nautical miles from Wellington.
"It was a very tough leg," said the race leaders' New Zealand skipper Mike Sanderson.
"It's the one I was most worried about but the guys did a fantastic job."
He added: "It was exhilarating in the Southern
Ocean, we hit 38 knots but the last 100, indeed 1,000 miles,
were very slow."
ABN Amro One is the overall leader of the six yachts still
competing in the nine-leg, 31,250 nautical-mile race around the world.
The event began in Vigo, northwest Spain on 12 November and is set to end in Gothenburg, Sweden around 17 June.
