 ABN Amro One leads the Volvo Ocean Race overall |
Dutch yacht ABN Amro One maintained a vice-like grip on the Volvo Ocean Race with victory in the third in-port race in Melbourne on Saturday. The overall leader won the four-lap, 28-nautical mile race ahead of American boat Pirates of the Caribbean.
Spain's movistar was 13 seconds behind in third with Ericsson, skippered by Briton Neal McDonald, in fourth.
ABN Amro One leads overall with 32.5 points, with ABN Amro Two in second on 25 points, followed by movistar on 18.
Pirates of the Caribbean have 16.5, Brasil 1 are on 16, Ericsson have 14.5 and Brunel are last of the seven boats on 11.5.
Points are awarded on the seven in-port races and nine legs.
Ericsson and Brasil 1 rejoined the race after suffering equipment damage on leg two.
McDonald's Ericsson was forced to quit the leg from Cape Town to Melbourne with keel problems and was shipped to Australia.
Brasil 1 sailed to Fremantle under jury rig with a broken mast and was trucked 4,000km east to Melbourne.
The fleet will set sail from Melbourne for Wellington on 12 February.
The race then stops off in Rio de Janeiro, Baltimore, New York, Portsmouth, Rotterdam and Gothenburg.
