Caradon A and Par Bay A in action at the World Gig Championships in May |
The annual County Gig Championships return to Newquay on Saturday when the men's event gets underway. Around 600 rowers will compete in the championships, which are the last event of the gig rowing season. Falmouth A won the women's title two weeks ago, whilst Mounts Bay A won the men's title in 2008. The County Championships were started in Newquay in 1970 by local coxswain Eddie Arthur, with ladies' crews joining the event in 1980. The Newquay event is one of three main competitions in the gig rowing calendar. The other two are the Tribute Gig Championships, which compromises a series of races throughout the season, and the World Championships, which are held on the Isles of Scilly in May. Caradon Men's A were crowned the 2009 Tribute Champions in June, whilst Par Men's A won the World Championships for the first time in May.
