Scarborough rower Bob Hewitt has been named in the Great Britain team for the World Cup regatta in Banyoles, Spain.

The 22-year-old is part of the lightweight men's four squad for the competition, which begins on 29 May.

"This is the first time in the senior team and I'm really looking forward to the World Cup," said Hewitt.

"I'm expecting there's going to be a big step in performance and we'll be obviously racing some of the best people in the world."

Hewitt, who rows for Tees Rowing Club, has previously represented Great Britain at Under-23 level.

"It's been a pretty long journey," he added. "I started rowing in Scarborough when I was about 14 in the coastal boats.

"I really enjoyed getting out in the sunshine and then began to get pretty fit and produce some relatively good scores on the ergo machines and I sort of got picked up from there and progressed forward.

"It's always difficult but it seems to be progressing quite well and quite fast."

And Hewitt said his selection for the World Cup is a stepping stone to his dream of representing Great Britain at the 2012 London Olympics.

"That's what motivates me when maybe I'm feeling a bit down and I'm thinking 'why am I doing this?'

"I've got a picture in my head and where I want to succeed and that's what motivates me."
