Campbell's world championship vow

Coleraine rower Alan Campbell has vowed to add this year's World Championship gold medal to the World Cup triumph he secured on Sunday.

Equipment problems affected Campbell's performance in Lucerne over the weekend but his fourth place finish was enough to secure the World Cup title.

"I'm little disappointed with the result in Lucerne but I'm really happy to have won the World Cup," he said.

"I'm now going to go for the World Championship and I'm going to win it."

Campbell was forced to borrow a spare set of blades from his fellow-competitor Mahe Drysale in Lucerne.

"My blades were broken when they were being transported and I had to scramble around and borrowed two sets before using Mahe Drysdale's spare set.

"Things didn't go my way but I've learned something from it, gained a lot of experience and it will make me stronger.

"I'm even more determined now to come out fighting for the World Championship."

Campbell is certain to have plenty of home support at the World Championships which will take place in Eton from 20-27 August.

At the start of the year, I was looking for top-six finishes but the goals have changed

Olympic champion Olaf Tufte is likely to be the man to beat in England after his impressive return to form in Lucerne.

The Norwegian, who had finished only fourth behind winner Campbell at last month's World Cup opener in Munich, took victory in Lucerne ahead of New Zealander Drysdale and Ondrej Synek of the Czech Republic.

"Olaf is one of my idols. I look up to him and Marcel Hacker and I'm now in and around them and I can't ask from anything better.

"In fact, Olaf paid me a big compliment after the race because he said that he was surprised that I hadn't beaten him again."

Campbell is now hoping to emulate the British four's achievement of two years ago when they went on to claim Olympic gold in Athens after producing a somewhat disappointing performance in Lucerne.

"Hopefully I can turn it around as well and I'm taking their efforts as an example.

"At the start of the year, I was looking for top-six finishes but the goals have changed."

Campbell's fellow-Coleraine man Richard Archibald will also be aiming to add the World Championship title to World Cup success.

Archibald and his Irish team-mates team-mates Gearoid Towey, Eugene Coakley and Paul Griffin won their lightweight men's four final in Lucerne by half a length from France and the triumph ensured the World Cup title for the Irish quartet.
