Campbell salutes his victory after crossing the line in Munich |
Alan Campbell secured victory in the men's single scull event at the Rowing World Cup in Munich on Saturday. The Coleraine man came home ahead of the world record holder and the Olympic champion to take first place and gold.
"It was a bit of a surprise but my hard work and perseverance paid off. I want to win so badly, my muscles go into top gear and the sprint just comes to me."
Richard Archibald and his Irish lightweight four colleagues won a silver medal in their final.
"This is the start of my assault on the Olympics in Beijing, the first step towards my goal of Olympic gold," Campbell said after his victory.
Archibald and his Irish team-mates also won World Championship silver last year.
The current crew has one change from last year with Gearoid Towey replacing the injured Tim Harnedy.
The overall World Cup champions are determined after the three regattas in Munich, Poznan and Lucerne.
The World Championships will start at Eton in England on 20 August.
