Bury Town victory secures title

Bury scored 115 goals on the way to becoming league champions

Suffolk non-league side Bury Town have been crowned champions of the Southern League Division One Midlands.

The title was secured on the final day of the season as Bury won 3-0 at home to Marlow, while closest rivals Hitchin could only draw at Burnham.

More than 1,500 supporters watched as Kieran Leabon scored a first half hat-trick inside the opening half hour.

Manager Richard Wilkins told BBC Radio Suffolk: "It's been a real team effort and the lads have been outstanding."

Bury won 15 of their last 16 games of the season and scored 115 goals throughout the league campaign.

Their points tally of 102 was just two more than Hitchin, who were one of only two teams to beat Bury in the league this year.

"Both the teams were as good as each other really. There wasn't a lot between them all season," added Wilkins.

Club Captain Tom Bullard missed the match but was a proud spectator.

"It's a great achievement for everyone in the team and everyone in the town," he said.

Bury Town will play their football next season in the Zamaretto Premier Division.
