Gordon played for The Hague and Heerenveen Flyers in the Netherlands |
Coventry Blaze have signed a third new import ahead of next season after agreeing a deal with Canadian defenceman John Gordon. The 29-year-old has spent the past four years in the Netherlands, twice winning the league championship with The Hague. In four years Gordon has accumulated 184 points in the Dutch league, scoring the most for a defenceman last term. The Canadian joins Danish goaltender Peter Hirsch and Slovenian forward Matic Kralj at the Skydome. Blaze coach Paul Thompson believes Gordon will be a boost to Coventry's blueline. He said: "John is a big player on the powerplay. I felt there was too much pressure on the shoulders of Jonathan Weaver last season. | His forte is his shot, he has a cannon of a one-timer Paul Thompson, Blaze coach |
"To have a successful powerplay you need two strong units. Weaves was relied on way too much and now we have another player of that standard to help him and the team out. "John scored 27 goals in 39 league games for The Hague last season and he led the whole league in powerplay goals as well as most goals for a defenceman. "That is something we did not have a lot of last season. "He is a big man with a big reach. He skates well, can jump in on the rush and lead the rush. His forte is his shot, he has a cannon of a one-timer."
