Cardiff Devils' 14-year wait for a championship will continue after they were pipped to the Elite League title by Sheffield Steelers. A 7-4 home win over Coventry Blaze on Saturday was followed by Sunday's 9-2 victory at Edinburgh Capitals. But Cardiff needed Sheffield to slip up and the Steelers never faltered in back-to-back games with Braehead Clan. A 5-1 away win was followed by a 7-2 victory as Sheffield pipped Cardiff to the title on regulation-time wins. The Devils won four league crowns and four play-off championships in the 1990s and had hoped to secure their first Elite League title since the competition's inception in 2003. Cardiff were one of three clubs, along with the now three-time champions Sheffield and 2006 winners Belfast, that could have lifted the 2011 Elite League trophy going into the final weekend of games.
