Wilson proud after Vipers double

Newcastle Vipers coach Rob Wilson paid tribute to his players after double success in the Elite League at the weekend against Cardiff and Sheffield.

Vipers beat Cardiff 2-1 in overtime on Saturday and followed that with a 4-2 win over Sheffield on Sunday.

"We've had a great weekend, on and off the ice," said Wilson after the defeat of the high-flying Steelers.

"I thought we were in control, Steelers couldn't really penetrate and were limited to shots from the outside."

He added: "We're two points out of first place, with games in hand on Nottingham and Belfast. This team isn't going to go away, we've got too much work ethic and will to win."

More than 7,000 people attended the two matches after a promotional drive for supporters during the last fortnight, leaving Wilson delighted at the response.

"It has been a great weekend, I'd like to thank everyone who came along to support us," he said.

"Particularly tonight it was electric in there, with that many people it's worth a goal. The crowd were phenomenal.

"If this weekend is an indication that hockey is alive and well in the city, and people will support and latch on to this team, it'll be an exciting year."

Meanwhile Canadian forward Mark Rooneem has arrived in the region and made his debut at the weekend, netting a goal and an assist against Sheffield.
