The draw for the inaugural 20/20 Hockeyfest took place on BBC Radio Sheffield's Steelers Hockey.
The competition will see all the Elite League teams play in a one-off winner-takes-all knockout tournament that will be settled on the day.
Sheffield Steelers face Hull Stingrays in the first quarter-final, before Belfast play Cardiff.
Edinburgh and Newcastle meet in the third game, and Coventry will take on Nottingham in an all-Midlands affair.
The competition will see the Elite League try a format that will see all of the games played in two 20-minute running clock periods and each side will only be allowed to field four skaters at any one time.
All the games will be played at the Sheffield Arena on Sunday, 4 October 2009.
Reaction to the draw:
Sheffield Steelers head coach Dave Matsos said:
"No matter who you are facing it is going to be stiff competition. I think it's going to be a good rivalry between the two sides this season with them being just a short distance away.
Hull Stingrays head coach Sylvain Clouthier said:
"I think it will be a big challenge for our team, but it will also be a lot of fun. I have tried to bring some character players into the set-up and we want to be a team that competes."
Belfast Giants head coach Steve Thornton said:
"I am happy with the draw against my old team. I think it will be an exciting game against Cardiff. They have a team similar to ourselves this year with a bit of size and a bit of speed."
Cardiff Devils head coach Gerard Adams said:
"I would have liked to have got Sheffield first, but I suppose I will settle with Belfast. We have a very skilled, exciting hockey team and we have a lot of potential to challenge the top teams."
Newcastle Vipers head Coach Rob Wilson said:
"If I am being honest I was hoping we would get a later game because we play on the Friday and the Saturday, so I am happy that we will get the chance to have some rest."
Edinburgh Capitals head coach Doug Christianson said:
"From my standpoint it's great to renew our rivalry with the Newcastle Vipers. We have played them a lot over the last few season and I know I am really looking forward to facing them."
Coventry Blaze head coach Paul Thompson said:
"I can't wait. It is going to be a fantastic event I am all for something new and vibrant. They laughed at Twenty20 cricket a few years ago and now it has taken over the sport.
"I think it is something the Elite League should be very proud of and we will be going there to win the trophy on the day."
Nottingham Panthers head coach Corey Neilson said:
"It's a great match-up for us. Coventry and ourselves had a great rivalry last season and it will be pretty much kill or be killed out there."
