Sheffield Steelers are threatening to pull out of the Continental Cup after their bid to host part of the tournament was not even heard.
A Steelers delegation were told at an International Ice Hockey Federation meeting in Budapest that Italian side Bolanzo had won the round.
Steelers official Mike O'Connor said: "The only option we've got is to withdraw from the competition, or not.
"It's clear that the tournament organiser had already been selected."
The reigning Elite League champions have been angered by the way the selection process for the tournament in October has been run.
General manager O'Connor added to BBC Radio Sheffield: "I've been talking to Ice Hockey UK about how the process was carried out and what the options are.
"There was no opportunity for us to put our bid forward or even table a discussion. It was a waste of time going to Budapest.
"I think the bid we put together - with the facilities and this city - was head and shoulders above our counterparts."
