Hewitt agrees new Steelers deal

Sheffield Steelers forward Jason Hewitt will return for another season after agreeing a year-long contract extension up until the end of April 2010.

"I have been part of this club for four seasons in which time we have come a long way," he told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"I'm happy to be coming back. We have a great core group of guys.

"And even though we expect to lose a few from our double-winning side, we have great faith that our coach David Matsos will recruit good players."

Hewitt scored 10 goals for the first time in his professional career in 2009, hitting 23 points.

He also impressed national team bosses making the senior GB team that collected a bronze medal at the World Championships.

We have been there, crossed the line first and know what it takes, why shouldn't we do it again

"I contributed more last season. I got more goals and played my best hockey.

"Scoring 10 goals shouldn't be my pinnacle it should be a stepping stone.

"Winning a Championship is nice so why not win a second one?

"Making the national team and winning a bronze was fantastic, so I wonder what a silver or gold would feel like.

"We know this will be a difficult year with the change in personnel.

"But that's what champions have to deal with, the whole championship experience last year will help us, we have been there, crossed the line first and know what it takes, why shouldn't we do it again?"
