Dowd's impressive debut season attracted the interest of several clubs |
Sheffield Steelers have made their first off season signing by agreeing terms with forward Robert Dowd. The 20-year-old had a sensational first season in professional ice hockey, helping the Steelers claim the double. Dowd also played a significant role in Great Britain's bronze medal-winning side in the World Championships. "Robert has had a fantastic year and it's nice to put that in the bag," Steelers general manager Mike O'Connor told BBC Radio Sheffield. "Nobody really thought that he would step up to the plate and do so well and his game will continue to improve." | Robert enjoyed himself this year and enjoyed the working relationship he has with the coach Dave Matsos |
O'Connor revealed that the Steelers had to beat off competition for the forward, who scored 29 goals to become an established international. "It would be naive to think that we didn't face competition, but I think Robert enjoyed himself this year and enjoyed the working relationship he has with the coach Dave Matsos," said O'Connor. "Robert has set his sights on a move to Europe in time and he realises that the best thing for him is to continue to grow in a place that appreciates him and will let him grow."
