Stingrays fail to reach play-offs

Coach Rick Strachan has put their poor season down to defensive lapses

Hull Stingrays' season is over after they failed to reach the play-offs with an 8-5 home defeat by Edinburgh.

The result came a day after they lost 5-2 at the Hull Arena against Cardiff.

Coach Rick Strachan told BBC Radio Humberside: "It was an extremely disappointing way to finish the season. We gave up too many goals this season.

"We made mental mistakes - guys not picking up their man, turning the puck over and making dumb plays and dumb decisions - that sums our season up."

It is the third year in a row that the Stingrays have failed to qualify for the play-offs and last season they picked up the wooden-spoon in the Elite League.

I wanted to give our fans a victory, they deserve it. They pay their money and they came to be entertained and to entertain them you have to win

Goals from Steve Slonina, Lee Esders, Slava Koulikov, James Cooke and a marker from Troy Neumeier, in his last ever game before retirement after 21 years as a professional, were not enough send the Hull fans into the close season in a happy mood.

Strachan added: "I wanted to give our fans a victory, they deserve it. They pay their money and they came to be entertained and to entertain them you have to win.

"We worked hard and we created loads of scoring chances but we also gave up way too many easy goals."
