Chieftains enjoy mixed fortunes

Chelmsford Chieftains

Chelmsford Chieftains enjoyed a weekend of mixed fortunes with a thumping league win followed by a cup exit.

On Saturday the Chieftains extended their lead in the ENL Division Two South with a 10-2 victory away to Solent & Gosport Devils.

However Sunday saw them exit the ENIHL Cup, following a 4-3 home defeat by League One side Invicta Dynamos.

The result left the Essex side as Group B runners-up and free to concentrate on securing league promotion.

The victory over Solent & Gosport Devils came despite missing a number of their players, but saw the visitors score three goals in the opening two periods and four more in the final.

Ross Brears secured a hat-trick for the Essex side to extend their lead over second-placed Invicta Mustangs.

The Chieftains took an early lead through Danny Hammond in their cup encounter with the Dynamos, before the Kent side hit back to take a three goal lead.

The home side responded with two late strikes, but it was not enough to ensure their progression.

The Chelmsford outfit will look to further increase their league prospects with another double-header next weekend, with a trip to Lee Valley on Saturday and the return fixture with Solent & Gosport at the Riverside a day later.
