Dicks takes charge with Wivenhoe 11th in the Ridgeons Premier Division
Julian Dicks has returned to football as the manager of Ridgeons Premier Division side Wivenhoe Town.
The former West Ham and Liverpool defender, who finished his playing career with Canvey Island, takes charge with the Dragons currently mid-table.
"I'm quite excited about it," the 40-year-old told BBC Essex.
"It's a challenge because there isn't any money there, they haven't won in the last nine games so it's going to be tough, but I'm looking forward to it."
Dicks takes over the managerial role at Broad Lane from caretaker Wayne Ward, who will remain as Dicks's assistant.
After retiring from full-time football, he pursued a golf career which was cut short by injury, but said he felt ready to return to the game.
"I love football and I've been out of it for a few years now, so I just want to get back into it because I think I've got a lot to offer Wivenhoe and the players who are there," he explained.
The north Essex club have been beset financial difficulties and the loss of key players this season, following the departure of previous manager Richard Carter in November.
