Scott Spearing's spectacular long range goal set Slough on their way |
Slough Jets annihilated local rivals Bracknell Bees 6-1 following a scintillating first-period display at the Hangar on Saturday. A superb long-range Scott Spearing goal and a fluke Blaz Emersic strike from distance, plus goals from Paddy Ward and Kevin Phillips, put Slough 4-0 up. Joe Ciccarello's screamer made it five before Peter Jasik finally found the net for the Bees. A second goal for man-of-the-match Phillips completed the rout for Slough. Neither of the Berkshire teams has enjoyed the best of starts to the season, but both came into the derby fixture with back-to-back wins under their belts. However, the Jets proved to be of a different class to their opponents, going a goal ahead inside two minutes as Ward bundled the puck past goaltender Gregg Rockman. Rockman endured a torrid first period as a rudderless Bees side were ruthlessly put to the sword by Slough, conceding from long range as Spearing doubled the home side's advantage midway through the period. The game was already looking beyond the Bees as a speculative shot from Emersic, well beyond the blue line, somehow found its way through Rockman and into the net for a third. And a power play goal from Phillips saw the game end as a contest with just one period played. Ciccarello's darting, low strike into the bottom right of Rockman's net proved the high point of the second period, though Bracknell eventually registered a goal through Jasik, almost alone in his resistance to the Jets' onslaught. Phillips wrapped up a convincing win for Slough with a second power play goal in the third period, unopposed by an absent Bees defence. Bees recovered on Sunday to record a 6-0 victory over lowly Wightlink Raiders, with Tom Annetts recording his second consecutive shut-out in goal to pile the pressure on Rockman. But Slough slipped to a 3-2 defeat at the Premier League's bottom club, Romford, coached by Jets legend Warren Rost. Jets are now fifth in the league, seven points adrift of leaders Guildford Flames but with two games in hand, with the Bees a point behind them in sixth.
