Brad Voth received a 12-week ban from the league

Cardiff Devils captain Brad Voth says he will appeal against a 12-match ban handed out for sucker-punching Sheffield Steelers' Randy Dagenais.

The punishment also includes an offence of slashing to the back of Dagenais' legs in Sunday's 2-0 defeat and Voth has a further 12-game suspended ban.

"I think we are going to appeal and hopefully get a few games knocked off," said Voth.

"I'm pretty disappointed. I don't think I deserve it at all."

Voth is also critical of the Steelers' attitude after the incident involving Dagenais.

"It's totally unprofessional on their part," insisted Voth.

"Going to the league is one thing but attacking someone personally in the media is very unprofessional. I think they could have done it a better way."

Also banned by the bmibaby Elite League for 10 games was Hull Stingrays forward Rick Kozak for sucker punching against Nottingham Panthers.

A league spokesman said: "Ice hockey is a very physical sport as everyone is well aware, and occasionally tempers flare and there are flashpoint incidents.

"However, the games last Sunday saw incidents that we feel are beyond what is the normally acceptable in terms of physical contact.

"After extensive video review, the incidents involving both Rick Kozak and Brad Voth have been deemed as being unacceptable.

"It is our duty to ensure that we send a message to all the clubs, the coaching staff and all the players as to what will not be tolerated."
