Sheppard is widely respected in the Elite League

Sheffield Steelers have made their fifth signing of the close season after Doug Sheppard agreed a one year extension to his contract.

The forward, who is also Steelers' assistant coach, played a key role in their play-off final success in Nottingham last season.

Head coach Dave Matsos told BBC Radio Sheffield: "Doug was a major reason we won last year.

"He's respected by every player, not just here but probably in the league."

Great Britain defenceman Mark Thomas announced his decision to stay at the House of Steel for another season earlier in the week.
