Scott Cameron's goal in the third period levelled the aggregate score |
The Belfast Giants lost their Elite League play-off against the Newcastle Vipers on penalties after the tie finished 6-6 on aggregate on Sunday. The Vipers won 5-3 in Saturday's first leg in Dundalk but Belfast struck back with a 3-1 success in the return leg. Peter Campbell put the Giants ahead and Shaun Johnson levelled before Shaun Sutter and Scott Cameron goals sent the game in Newcastle into overtime. But the Vipers held their nerve to claim victory in the shoot-out.
The defeat ends the Giants season and brings to a conclusion, Ed Courtenay's three-year reign with the Belfast outfit.
Giants general manager Todd Kelman is expected to announce Courtenay's successor within the next fortnight.
