Dave Whistle has turned down a return to the Belfast Giants |
The Belfast Giants must continue their search for a new coach after Dave Whistle rejected a return to the club. The Canadian, who enjoyed a successful spell at the Odyssey, indicated in May that he was happy in his current post as Cardiff Devils coach.
The Giants offered Whistle a financial package but this has been turned down.
Former Sheffield Steelers coach Mike Blaisdell has also distanced himself from the vacancy which arose after Tony Hand's departure in May.
John Elliott, Giants General Manager, hopes to have Hand's successor in place next week.
"Dave, like last years' coach Tony Hand, had many considerations with family and other possible ventures at home," said Elliott.
"Therefore, it was important that we gave him ample time to consider his ice hockey and business careers along with offering an attractive financial package consummate with his experience and reputation.
"After much deliberation Dave has decided that he will not be returning to Belfast.
"Although this may be disappointing to our fans who would have liked to see Dave back on the bench, I can assure them, I have narrowed the high quality field of contenders and feel confident that a deal will be closed by the end of next week."
