Meeting: Glorious Goodwood Day Five: Saturday 31 July Coverage: Live on Channel 4; reports on BBC Radio 5 live & BBC Sport website Midday (left) produced two fine bursts in the closing stages to win |
Midday secured back-to-back wins in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood after holding off a stiff challenge from Stacelita. Ridden by Tom Queally, 15-8 favourite Midday took to the front in the final stages and, despite being reeled in, found another burst to win. After a stewards' inquiry Midday, who appeared to cut across Stacelita in the final furlong, hung on for victory. In the Stewards' Cup, 20-1 shot Evens And Odds produced a stunning finale to sprint past Jonny Mudball and triumph. Prohibit (33-1) finished third behind Jonny Mudball (14-1), with Rileyskeepingfaith (12-1) back in fourth. Meanwhile, trainer Henry Cecil was delighted by four-year-old Midday's second successive victory in the Group One Nassau Stakes. | 606: DEBATE |
"I have to be careful with her, but so long as the ground is not quick she will hopefully run in the Yorkshire Oaks next," said Cecil. "Hopefully she will have a good end-of-year campaign and the Breeders' Cup is in the mix. "She is getting a bit lazy and prefers to quicken gradually. She likes a strong pace and thought she had done enough, but quickened when the second came to her." Queally and Christophe Soumillon, on board Stacelita (9-2), later made history as the stewards' inquiry - which included both jockeys - was shown on television for the first time. The places remained unchanged, but Queally was handed a two-day ban for careless riding. "It is good for the public to see what happens in an inquiry and how it works, and I have no problem with that," commented Soumillon. "We were in a good position all the way, when we quickened the winner was a bit quicker than me and when Midday took the lead she did so with a lot of easy feeling." Antara (8-1) finished third, with Strawberrydaiquiri (9-2) back in fourth.
