Rebel Soldier comes through the middle of the field to take the Gordon Stakes

Lord Shanakill reeled in heavily-backed favourite Dalghar to win the Betfair Cup on day one of Glorious Goodwood.

Jockey Tom Queally unleashed the four-year-old's challenge in the final two furlongs, pushing Dalghar down into third with Cat Junior finishing second.

"He's a classy horse and people forget he's a Group One winner," said Queally.

The Group Two race involving 12 runners was preceded by the Group Three Gordon Stakes, which was won by Jeremy Noseda's inexperienced Rebel Soldier.

Ryan Moore raced to his 95th win of the season, just holding on from James Given-trained Dandino while Royal Ascot runner-up Arctic Cosmos came third as the leading trio finished in betting order.

Trained by former champion Henry Cecil, Lord Shanakill started the Betfair Cup, known for many years as the Lennox Stakes, at 13-2 while Finjaan - bidding to win the Betfair Cup at the famous Sussex venue for the second year running - was never in contention.

"We tried him at a mile, he ran in the sprints, but at the end of the day he's a seven-furlong horse," added Queally.

"It's a tricky sort of distance because it's in-between and the races aren't there most of the time.

"The last day at Chester did his confidence the world of good. He takes a couple of strides to go through the gears, but once he got there he was flying."

The Gordon Stakes was also a strongly-run race, in which Corsica made most of the early running - but it was marred by a fatal accident to Frankie Dettori's mount Film Score.

Glorious Goodwood is one of the highlights of the British sporting summer, with high-quality racing action taking place over five days against the picturesque backdrop of the Sussex Downs.
