Meeting: Glorious Goodwood Day Three: Thursday 29 - 1525 BST Goodwood Cup Coverage: Live on Channel 4; reports on BBC Radio 5 live & BBC Sport website Illustrious Blue produced a late run to edge out Electrolyser
Illustrious Blue pipped Electrolyser to win the 2010 Goodwood Cup after odds-on favourite Age of Aquarius pulled up with half a mile to go. Age of Aquarius, ridden by Johnny Murtagh, led in the early stages and looked to be easing to victory with Electrolyser strong in second. But the William Knight-trained Illustrious Blue, with Jim Crowley on board, produced a late burst to win. It was a seventh win at Goodwood for the locally trained horse. Aidan O'Brien's Age of Aquarius was taken to a veterinary centre near Arundel for further observation after being treated on the course. | 606: DEBATE |
Seven-year-old Illustrious Blue eventually won the Group Two contest by a length and a quarter, with Purple Moon third. Trainer Knight said: "It's the third time he's won at Glorious Goodwood and a different trip each time, so what a star. Jim gave him a lovely ride. "I regrettably should have tried him over two miles last year, but we've had a fantastic run with him and he keeps on winning for us. "Jim has put a lot of good work in on the horse - he knows him so well. "It's great teamwork from everyone at home because we're a smallish yard. "To have a horse like this to come along makes a big difference to everybody." Meanwhile, Clive Cox, trainer of 33-1 runner-up Electrolyser said: "I'm really pleased because he has proved as good as I thought he was. "There is more to come as he has not been scoping right and we've had to be patient to get him back. "There are a few interesting races in France as well as over here to think about."
