Guernsey could hold two race meetings

Guernsey could hold two race meetings a year if there is enough public support, organisers have said.

The annual horse racing meeting, held on L'Ancresse Common, is scheduled for May 3 in 2010.

Jim Jamouneau said: "I'm not saying they won't, I'm not saying they will, but it could be on the cards."

He said preparation for this year's meeting had been held up by the bad winter weather but he hoped it would all be ready for the day.

Jamouneau said: "We've sown an early type of rye grass in with the mixture of grass seed so that, we hope, by May 3 we'll have enough coverage on it to make it a race course, but at the minute it looks like anything but a race course."

Racing has been an annual event since it returned to L'Ancresse in 2005, the first time in 12 years a meeting had been held in Guernsey.
