McCoy passed 1,000 winners on Majadou at Cheltenham in 1999 and then passed 2,000 winners on Magical Bailiwick at Wincanton in 2004. But despite achieving the 3,000-winner milestone, McCoy revealed that breaking the great Sir Gordon Richards's record of 269 winners in a season is one of his main career highlights. McCoy beat that record after winning on Valfonic at Warwick in April 2002 and went on to end the 2001/02 campaign on 289 winners - a record which still stands. "That was a record which had stood for 55 years and was set by someone who was 24 times champion flat jockey," he said. "Sir Gordon Richards is the only jockey who was ever knighted and to beat his record was my proudest achievement." The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites |
