Racing trainer David Pipe has told BBC Somerset that he is slowly coming to terms with training a Grand National winner in only his second season. Comply or Die saw off King Johns Castle to win at Aintree on Saturday. Pipe said: "It still hasn't sunk in yet. We've been partying non-stop since. Everything went according to plan, which it doesn't usually. "I thought 'OK, he's going to be placed' and then I thought 'Oh my God, this is going to get even better'." He added: "It was a long run-in and the horse kept pulling out even more. | It's great for the South West and especially my yard Grand National-winning trainer David Pipe |
"You could name him the winner from a long way out but obviously I try and keep my feet on the ground." Pipe has now matched his father Martin, who had to wait 19 seasons before landing a National win with Miinehoma. "I've been privileged to have him as a good teacher, so he's taught me well," he said. Comply or Die's victory rounded off an excellent Aintree meeting for Pipe, who also saw Our Vic beat the odds-on favourite Kauto Star to win the Totesport Bowl. "We've had a good meeting, so it's great for the South West and especially my yard," concluded the Somerset-based trainer.
