Did you know just how good the county of Somerset is when it comes to training racehorses? 

When it comes to National Hunt racing, we've got three of the best trainers in the country. 

Phillip Hobbs is based near Minehead, David Pipe is at Nicholashay near Wellington and champion trainer Paul Nicholls operates from Ditcheat.

The racing colours are unique to each owner

BBC Somerset reporters Andrew Enever and Drew Savage got an exclusive look behind the scenes at Paul Nicholls' Manor Farm Stables in Ditcheat to get an idea of what it takes to become the top racehorse trainer in the country.

Desert Quest, trained by Paul Nicholls, raced over fences for the first time in Taunton in November - and won!

Paul's right-hand man, Dan Skelton, knows the characteristics of every single one of the 100-plus horses at the stable - and was happy to introduce us to 'Great Mates': a young racehorse in the early stages of his development.

Paul Nicholls' success in becoming Champion Trainer is partly due to making the most of the geography of Somerset. The climb up Ditcheat Hill is vital in helping the stable's stars like Denman reach peak fitness.
