Interview: Somerset trainer David Pipe Somerset trainer David Pipe has told BBC Points West he is backing Comply or Die to help him emulate his father Martin and win the Grand National. "The favourite's Cloudy Lane, and we're four pounds better off," he said. "We won at Newcastle last time out so the trip shouldn't bother him. All he does is jump and gallop." Comply or Die will race at Aintree alongside four other horses from the Pipe stable - Madison du Berlais, Vodka Bleu, Joaaci and Milan Deux Mille. Pipe, who is based in south west Somerset at Nicholashayne near Wellington, cannot wait for Saturday to come around. "It's a race that anyone in racing wants to win," he said. "It's fantastic, it's four and a half miles and there's some really classy horses in it this year." | You need old-fashioned steeplechasers, and hopefully the ones we've got going there fit that bill. |
"The fences take some jumping and it's a great atmosphere when you get there on the day. "I've been fortunate enough to be associated with Dad when he won it with Miinehoma and that was some feeling." Given the experience Pipe has gained from working with and then taking over from his father Martin, he knows better than most people what is required to win at Aintree. "You have to have your horse go in there in top condition fitness-wise and health-wise, and you need to have a horse that jumps and stays. "You need old-fashioned steeplechasers, and hopefully the ones we've got going there fit that bill."
