Royal Ascot day three as it happened
Yeats defended his Ascot Gold Cup on Ladies' Day, the third day of the Royal meeting at the Berkshire course.

Jockey Mick Kinane produced Aidan O'Brien's star as the field entered the home straight and they beat off the late challenge of Geordieland and Le Miracle, with the popular Sergeant Cecil trailing home in last place.

Zaham won the Hampton Court Stakes, with Eddie Jock clinching the Britannia Stakes.

Earlier, Silkwood downed hot favourite All My Loving in the Ribblesdale Stakes for fillies and Winker Watson won the opening Group 2 Norfolk Stakes under jockey Jimmy Fortune.

1730: King George V Stakes (3YO, 1m 4f)
1 Heron Bay (S Drowne) 20-1
2 Filios (L Dettori) 6-1
3 Walking Talking (R Hughes) 12-1
4 Eradicate (K Darley) 9-2 Fav

Heron Bay dug deep to edge out Frankie Dettori on Filios and win the King George V Stakes.

The 20-1 chance took up the running two furlongs out, but Dettori seemed to have timed his run to perfection on Luca Cumani's colt.

But Steve Drowne coaxed extra reserves out of trainer Geoff Wragg's Heron Bay to win by a head.

The pair pulled four lengths clear of Henry Cecil's Walking Talking, with top weight Eradicate in fourth.

Wragg said: "The horse is so tough. He was headed twice but came back.

"He's such an idle fellow. He just likes to eat and sleep, so I've had to give him some extra work over the last week or two. He's improved with each run and will go to the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood now."

1705: Hampton Court Stakes (3YO, 1m 2f)
1 Zaham (R Hills) 7-2 fav
2 Al Shemali (R Moore) 6-1
3 Desert Dew (M Hills) 8-1
14 ran

Zaham won by a head from the fast-finishing Al Shemali with Desert Dew getting up to pip long-time leader Kid Mambo by a neck on the line.

Winning trainer Mark Johnston said: "This was always the target after Epsom. We thought he wanted the step up to Pattern class. He's proved that now and hopefully now there are better things to come.

"It was a tough race, though. He's got a fantastic attitude but we've always known that."

1652: Mark Johnston's runner Zaham, ridden by Richard Hills, is the 7-2 favourite for the 1655, the Hampton Court Stakes. Kid Mambo is out to 11-2 with Al Shemali trimmed to 13-2.

"Zaham-i'm very confident over this one. please."
Ruthere909 on 6061628: Britannia Stakes (3YO, 1m)
1 Eddie Jock (J Murtagh) 33-1
2 Ea (R Moore) 16-1
3 St Philip (S Sanders) 33-1
4 Artimino (J Spencer) 4-1 fav

Top-weight Eddie Jock edged a thrilling Britannia Stakes by a length from Ea and a fast-finishing St Philip.

The Johnny Murtagh-ridden gelding, trained by Michael Bell, was giving 4lb or more away all round.

The favourite, James Fanshawe's Artimino, finished fourth.

Bell said: "I thought with 9st 7lb he had a very difficult task, but he did run a very good race when third in the Free Handicap.

"The form of that race has worked out extremely well. You could make a case out for him on that, but I thought it was mission impossible off 104 in a handicap.

"He was a right scamp before we gelded him, but he's never looked back since.

"I'm delighted for the owner. It's the second horse he's had with me and he was a cheap yearling."

1610: Clare Balding and Willie Carson pick out De la Grandera as the best-looking horse in the parade ring ahead of the Britannia Stakes, off at 1620. Artimino is the narrow favourite at 4-1 with Colorado Rapid at 5-1.

1545: Gold Cup (Group 1, 2m 4f)
1 Yeats (M Kinane) 8-13 fav
2 Geordieland (J Spencer) 12-1
3 Le Miracle (D Boeuf) 50-1
14 ran

Lord du Sud made all the early running from Tungsten Strike and The Last Drop with Yeats sitting towards the back of the field for one and a half laps.

Mick Kinane inched the Aidan O'Brien-trained colt forward at the five furlong pole and when they turned for home he pressed the button.

Jamie Spencer and Geordieland made a strong late bid but Yeats responded to win going away.

"Great racing, mick kinane best jockey."

1546: Yeats has shortened further to 8-13 from 4-6 as the horses mill about at the start.

1541: Gold Cup latest betting: Yeats is 4-6 to repeat last year's success, with Sergeant Cecil drifting to 13-2 from 6-1. Montare is 12-1 third favourite with Cherry Mix, Geordieland and Allegretto all at 14-1.

"Montare and Allegretto e/w for me."

1535: Sergeant Cecil's owner Terry Cooper says: "It's just a dream for a small owner like myself to have a horse this good. Sometimes it feels like you're losing him slightly because everyone wants a piece of him but that's ok.

"He's further forward this year. I think they've worked him a little bit harder this year. He's up and ready for it but it's a hard job against the others today."

1530: Just 15 minutes to go before the big one, the Gold Cup.

"Yeats is a magnificent-looking animal," says Clare Balding as the horses circle in the parade ring.

Willie Carson adds: "He's a very proud horse."

In the background, Dame Kelly Holmes is chatting to the Queen.

1527: "O'Brien has lost it today - Rain coming down...My late tip for the 3.45 goes to Geordieland!! 20 e/w - Come on."

1518: The rain is now pouring down at Ascot as Dame Kelly Holmes presents the trophy for the Ribblesdale Stakes.

1508: Ribblesdale Stakes (Fillies' Group 2, 3YO, 1m 4f)
1 Silkwood (P Robinson) 4-1
2 All My Loving (M Kinane) 15-8 fav
3 Dalvina (J Spencer) 8-1
12 ran

Silkwood won impressively with a five-length victory over hot favourite All My Loving in the fillies-only Ribblesdale Stakes.

Philip Robinson's mount hit the front as the field entered the home straight and quickly cruised past the long-time leader Majounes Song, who was threatening to nip clear.

All My Loving responded but was unable to close the gap and just held off Dalvina.

Winning trainer Michael Jarvis said: "She wasn't really trained last year so we got her going through the winter and started off at Wolverhampton.

"She has always shown immense talent. We were keen to run her in the Oaks but she is such a fluent mover that when it came up soft we discussed it with Sheikh Mohammed and got an alternative here.

"Rather than run her on ground she wouldn't like we thought we'd wait for this. She is hugely talented."

Robinson added: "I was delighted. She switched off nicely early on and when I asked her to increase she did it easy."

1500: Ribblesdale favourite All My Loving is drifting from 15-8 to 2-1, while Silkwood is 4-1, in from 9-2.

1458: Clare Balding and Willie Carson select Silkwood and Baroness Richter as the picks of the paddock for the second race, the fillies-only Ribblesdale Stakes.

1452: According to BBC racing presenter Clare Balding, the Queen doesn't actually bet but they do sometimes have a sweepstake in the Royal Box.

1445: The Queen makes her way down to the saddling boxes to see her horse Lost in Wonder, which will go in the day's second race the Ribblesdale Stakes.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained filly is a general 25-1 shot, well behind the hot favourite All My Loving (7-4).

1437: Norfolk Stakes (Group 2, 2YO, 5f)
1 Winker Watson (J Fortune) 2-1 fav
2 Art Advisor (S Sanders) 14-1
3 Spirit of Shajah (K McEvoy) 9-2
11 ran
Also: 33-1 Silver Guest 4th

Winker Watson made his charge from the far rail from a furlong and a half out but as the horse picked up pace he veered to his left.

Jockey Jimmy Fortune corrected him and the Peter Chapple-Hyam-trained favourite won by a length and a quarter, with Art Advisor getting up for second by a short head.

Aidan O'Brien's Warsaw, the second favourite, struggled to 10th place.

"I've always thought he was quite useful but, in all fairness, he just got away with that," said Chapple-Hyam.

"He probably wants further. I trained him for the Norfolk all along but he's quite green. Jimmy said when he hit the front he didn't really know what to do."

The winner was handed a 10-1 quote from 16-1 for the 2000 Guineas. Chapple-Hyam said: "I'd like 16-1 for him just to get to the Guineas! I'm glad we've won today and we'll enjoy this first."

Kinane said Warsaw "fell out of the gate" and he knew he wasn't travelling from halfway.

1430: The Norfolk Stakes kicks off Ladies' Day at Ascot.

1427: Clare Balding and Willie Carson select hot favourite Winker Watson as the pick of the bunch in the parade ring. They also like the look of Art Advisor.

1421: Aidan Brien's Warsaw has drifted to 7-2 from 100-30 in the opening Norfolk Stakes, leaving Winker Watson the favourite at 15-8.

1415: The Queen and the Royal party are driven into the parade ring, to the National Anthem and widespread applause, before alighting under a few spots of rain to take up their seats in the Royal Box.

"Her majesty, as usual, looks absolutely lovely. I always blub at the sight after. Long may she reign."

1403: Fashion tipsters, I can put you out of your misery - the Queen is dressed in beige and cream, with a beige and chocolate-coloured hat, though she's wrapped up at the moment because it's a touch chilly and overcast.

1400: Here's the BBC racing team's tips of the day:

Clare Balding & Willie Carson: Montare (1545) e/w
Rishi Persad: Ascalon (1655) e/w
Angus Loughran: Zaham (1655)
Jim McGrath: Gulf Express (1620)
Fashion Team: Bespoke Boy (1430)

1353: Despite some spots of rain in the air, the going is good to firm, good in places on the Gold Cup course and good to firm, firm in places on the straight course.

"It's back riding as quick as it was on Tuesday, maybe faster. The bias is the middle to far side," said jockey Steve Drowne.

"You have to stick to horses that like fast ground."

1345: Afternoon everyone. So, 45 minutes to go before the first race of Ladies' Day - the 5f dash that is the group 2 Norfolk Stakes.

Peter Chapple-Hyam's Winker Watson is the narrow favourite from Aidan O'Brien's Warsaw.

Apparently you can get 1000-1 that the Queen will turn up in baseball cap and bandana. The smart money, though, is cream and beige.
