Royal Ascot day one as it happened
All the action as it happened from the opening day of Royal Ascot.

Irish and English 2,000 Guineas winner Cockney Rebel was beaten by Excellent Art in the St James's Palace Stakes.

In the Queen Anne Stakes, George Washington, the winner of four Group One races, returned to the track after fertility problems but was beaten by Ramonti for the Godolphin stable.

606: DEBATE

1730 - Windsor Castle Stakes (5f)
1. Drawnfromthepast (Martin Dwyer) 9-1
2. Kingsgate Native (G Baker) 66-1
3. Hatta Fort (Hugh Bowman) 3-1 Fav 20 ran

1655 - Ascot Stakes (2m 4f)

2. Juniper Girl (Luke Morris) 16-1
3. Som Tala (Hugh Bowman) 15-2
4. Leg Spinner (Johnny Murtagh) 5-1
20 ran. Dist: 3, sh-hd

Full House stayed on well to outpace his rivals and take the Ascot Stakes, the longest race on the opening day of the Royal meeting.

After finishing fourth in this race last year, Jimmy Fortune had his mount in a challenging position from the home turn and they kept ahead of the rest of the field

In a battle for second, claimer Luke Morris edged his mount Juniper Girl just clear of Som Tala, ridden by Hugh Bowman on the line.

1650: While elsewhere England's cricketers are trying to beat the West Indies in the fourth Test at the Riverside, Leg Spinner, trained by Tony Martin, is likely to go off as one of the favourites in the Ascot Stakes.

1635: Frankie Dettori does another flying dismount as Godolphin win a Group One race in Britain after a long gap.

"I had to get serious at the end and I might end up with a ban. It has been a while since Godolphin had a Group One win and I'm delighted."
Frankie Dettori on BBC Television

1620 - Queen Anne Stakes (1m)
1. Ramonti (Frankie Dettori) 5-1
2. Jeremy (Ryan Moore) 14-1
3. Turtle Bowl (Olivier Peslier) 33-1
8 ran. Dist: sh-hd, sh-hd

Ramonti gave Frankie Dettori his first win of the 2007 Royal meeting in a tight finish.

The 5-1 favourite led early on but his chance seemed to have disappeared when he was challenged by Ryan Moore on Jeremy.

But Dettori seemed to find another gear in the closing stages to narrowly deny Jeremy with Turtle Bowl just behind.

George Washington, on his return to the track after his fertility problems, was too eager from the start but never looked liked winning but will improve for the run.

"Once he got the split he was going to win. This race is the one that counts for three-year-old milers. He's a smashing horse to deal with and I'm delighted to have had the chance to ride him."
Excellent Art's jockey Jamie Spencer

1558: Trainer Aidan O'Brien has a broad smile on his face as he greets Excellent Art back in the winners' enclosure.

1545 - St James's Palace Stakes (1m)
1. Excellent Art (Jamie Spencer) 8-1
2. Duke of Marmalade (Michael Kinane) 11-1
3. Astronomer Royal (Colm O'Donoghue) 14-1
8 ran

Trainer Aidan O'Brien claimed a one-two-three as Excellent Art found a late gap to win the St James's Palace Stakes ahead of stablemates Duke of Marmalade and Astronomer Royal.

Jamie Spencer, just back from a length suspension, kept his mount at the back and came through on the rail between horses to overhaul Duke of Marmalade in the final stages.

The favourite Cockney Rebel was well-placed in the final couple of furlongs but failed to make any impact in the closing stages.

1543: Cockney Rebel, the mount of Olivier Peslier, is set to go off as the even-money favourite.

"This is an amazing place to be - it's certainly different to a two-mile handicap hurdle at Bath."
Rock star Steve Harley, after whose band the horse Cockney Rebel is named.

1530: The horses for the St James's Palace Stakes are in the parade ring, including Cockney Rebel - will he be making punters smile in the next half-hour or so? The Queen is among those taking a closer look.

"I've lived all my life to do this."
An emotional trainer Lee Freedman is virtually speechless after Miss Andretti's victory

1505 - King's Stand Stakes (5f)
1. Miss Andretti (Craig Newitt) 3-1f
2. Dandy Man (Pat Shanahan) 15-2
3. Magnus (Damien Oliver) 14-1
21 ran. Dist: 1, nk

Australian challenger Miss Andretti proved a class above the rest of the field to win the King's Stand Stakes.

The 3-1 favourite came through well in the second half of the five-furlong sprint after racing where the pace was early on.

She quickened up superbly with a furlong and a half left to race clear of the rest of the field and claim her fourth win out of four this year.

Dandy Man, who travelled alone on the stand side, swooped late for second but was unable to get past the Australian challenger with another horse from down under Magnus back in third, just ahead of last year's winner Takeover Target.

1500: "We've been planning for this for a quite a while and we're looking forward to it. If she runs to her best, she can win the race," Lee Freedman, trainer of Miss Andretti.

1447: That was a good start for favourite backers. Next up is the King's Stand Stakes over five furlongs which will be a real sprint - can Miss Andretti make it two wins for favourites in a row?

"He'd only one run coming here so we were a bit worried but we're delighted with him. He's naturally very quick but I think he can go further than six furlongs."
Henrythenavigator's trainer Aidan O'Brien

1430 - Coventry Stakes (6f)
1. Henrythenavigator (MJ Kinane) 11-4f
2. Swiss Franc (Ted Durcan) 25-1
3. Luck Money (Richard Quinn) 13-2
20 ran. Dist: , sh-hd

The Aidan O'Brien-trained Henrythenavigator gives favourite backers the perfect start with an impressive win in the opener in a new course record.

The talented two-year-old came through in the centre of the track and was never too far away from the early pace and challenged fellow Irish raider Pencil Hill, who faded late.

Swiss Franc ran on well from the back of the field to grab second, just ahead of Luck Money, the mount of the returning Richard Quinn.

It gave jockey Mick Kinane his 39th winner at the Royal meeting.

1425: The jockeys are on their way out for the opening race for two-year-olds in the Coventry Stakes with Henrythenavigator likely to go off favourite.

"It's nice ground and there could be some fast times out there today."
Jockey Steve Drowne

1409: The procession is making its way down the course with the Queen looking happy as she waves to the crowds.

"The Queen looks magnificent. It's a deep fuschia hat and coat dress and underneath she is wearing a multi-coloured satin crepe dress."
BBC fashion expert James Sherwood

1404: The Royal Procession is on its way and the Queen is wearing a bright pink hat with a turquoise bow. She is joined in the front carriage by the Duke of Edinburgh and the Duke of York. The Prince of Wales is in the second carriage with the Duchess of Cornwall.

"It's great to be here - this is what you build your year around. I didn't expect to be here this time last year but it's strange what a year can do."
Jockey Richard Quinn who has returned to action after retiring last year with a back problem

1352: Racing is set to get underway at 1430 but before that there is the traditional Royal Processione - what colour will the Queen's hat be?

"I think you see the beautful and the damned at Royal Ascot, and I relish both."
BBC fashion expert James Sherwood

1348: The sun is out at Royal Ascot with a slight breeze cooling things down, although there is rain forecast for later in the day. The first-day going is good to firm.
