Dettori rejects Ascot ban appeal
Frankie Dettori
Dettori is aiming to win the Derby for the first time on Saturday
Champion jockey Frankie Dettori will definitely miss the whole of the Royal Ascot at York meeting after deciding not to appeal against a six-day ban.

And the plum rides for the Godolphin training operation will now go to Australian jockey Kerrin McEvoy.

Dettori was handed the ban by Haydock stewards on Thursday after being found guilty of careless riding.

His mount Royal Orissa appeared to make a manoeuvre right which resulted in Aversham taking a crashing fall.

The ban is for 13-19 June with the royal meeting running from 14-18 June.

Aversham's jockey Fran Berry emerged unscathed despite the drama, and it had been thought Dettori may consider a bid to get the ban reduced or overturned.

But Dettori told BBC Sport he would not be appealing.

"It was one of those freak accidents that sometimes happen," he said.

"I didn't even know Fran Berry was behind me. He took a very nasty fall - and I'm glad Fran and the horse are fine.

Life doesn't stop at Royal Ascot and I'll be back

"There was a jockey on the ground, a horse on the ground, and someone has to take the blame."

Dettori was speaking after winning the opening race, the Princess Elizabeth Stakes, at Epsom's Derby meeting on Sundrop.

Ironically, he said the filly would have a leading chance at Royal Ascot, and could land a Group One race at some stage.

Louise Williams, stipendiary steward at Haydock, explaining the ban on Thursday, said: "The penalty for careless riding ranges from a caution to nine days.

"Approaching the two-furlong marker Dettori manoeuvred to his right and Mr Berry clipped his heels. We considered it to be seriously careless and we have given him six days, so that is the whole of Ascot."

Both Aversham and his jockey Fran Berry appeared to walk away unscathed from the incident.

Dettori enjoyed a hugely successful Royal Ascot last year, picking up six winners to be crowned top jockey.

His successes included Group One victories on Refuse To Bend in the Queen Anne Stakes and Papineau in the Gold Cup.

The Royal meeting is being held at York in 2005 while the Ascot course undergoes a massive redevelopment.
