Soviet Song and Murtagh were easy winners |
Soviet Song sprung a surprise with victory over the much-fancied Attraction in the Falmouth Stakes on the opening day of the July meeting at Newmarket. Ridden by Johnny Murtagh, the 11-4 second favourite showed a great turn of foot in the final couple of furlongs to overhaul her younger rival.
Murtagh had held his mount up in the early stages but then moved dangerously into contention at the crucial moment to win by two and a half lengths with French challenger Baqah in third.
It was a first defeat for Attraction, who had made much of the running early on but couldn't up the speed when it mattered in the Group One race.
But Murtagh was full of praise for his mount: "She is a great filly. James said to ride her with confidence and I rode her with all the confidence in the world," he said.
"He never lost faith in her, and she deserves that. She got warm, but it is a hot day and I got a bit hot myself down at the start. She is a class act and has done it really well there today.
"I said to Kevin after the race that he has a great filly, but ran into a machine today."
Earlier, Richard Hannon's Jewel In The Sand followed up her impressive Royal Ascot win with victory in the Cherry Hinton Stakes.
The 2-1 favourite swept into the lead a furlong and a half from home but Salsa Brava battled hard before being beaten by a neck with Extreme Beauty five lengths back in third.
