Johnny Murtagh rides Choisir to victory at Royal Ascot |
Choisir broke Ascot's six-furlong record with a scintillating run to win Saturday's feature race, the Golden Jubilee Stakes.
The Australian horse landed a Royal Ascot double for trainer Paul Perry, having triumphed in the King's Stand Stakes on Tuesday.
Johnny Murtagh steered Choisir to victory by half a length from 11-8 favourite Airwave, ridden by Dane O'Neill, with 50-1 shot Baron's Pit guided into third by Jim Fortune.
Choisir, drawn on the far side in stall 20, was up with the leaders from the start along with Godolphin's Three Points and American raider Morluc.
It was just sensational - the thrill of a lifetime Winning trainer Paul Perry |
Murtagh gradually took the colt over to the stands side and, with the rail to help him in the closing stages, his rivals could not peg him back. The Irishman told BBC Sport: "He jumped out and showed loads of speed.
"I just let him drift across because it seems to be faster ground there but there was a lot of traffic.
"He's just so speedy. He took me there all the way and when I got to a furlong and a half out I didn't think anyone could beat me.
"He just picked up, kept going, and I thought Airwave was coming but she wouldn't have got him today."
A delighted Perry added: "It was just sensational - the thrill of a lifetime.
"Johnny had a plan to go straight and then work across and it turned out super."
Perry and connections will now mull over a possible crack at the Darley July Cup.
He said: "Johnny said 'leave him here and he'll win everything', so we'll have to talk about it now."
