Royal Ascot: Day one review
All the action from the first day of the world's most glamorous race meeting.

1730 Balmoral Handicap
Five furlongs

1 Deportivo (R Hughes) 9-1
2 Baltic King (J Fortune) 5-1f
3 Coconut Penang (K Fallon) 10-1
4 Awarding (C Catlin) 25-1

A good end to the day for jockey Richard Hughes and trainer Roger Charlton who finished as they started - with a winner.

Deportivo defied top weight to claim a comfortable victory after making the running on the stands side and winning by two lengths.

The favourite Baltic King could not catch the winner, with Coconut Penang edging out Awarding for third.

1655 Duke of Edinburgh Stakes
One mile four furlongs

1 Waverley (J Fortune) 14-1
2 Researched (K Fallon) 7-2f
3 Hambledon (P Robinson) 14-1
4 Canada (C Soumillon) 50-1

Waverley, ridden by Jimmy Fortune, held off the challenge of Kieren Fallon's mount Researched to take the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes.

The horse led alongside Martin Pipe's outsider Canada going into the straight and managed to hold on despite a strong challenge.

There were some anxious moments for trainer Hughie Morrison, who also owns the winner, before surviving a stewards' inquiry.

1620 Queen Anne Stakes
One mile

1 Dubai Destination (L Dettori) 9-2
2 Tillerman (R Hughes) 16-1
3 Right Approach (K Fallon) 20-1

Dubai Destination got the better of red-hot favourite Hawk Wing to take the second Group One race of the day.

With Frankie Dettori aboard, the Godolphin horse, who has been troubled by injury over the past season, accelerated with about two furlongs to go and none of his rivals could cope.

Tillerman and the Queen's horse Right Approach battled for second and third but Hawk Wing was a real disappointment finishing well down the field, and was later found to be lame.

1545 St James' Palace Stakes
One mile

1 Zafeen (D Holland) 8-1
2 Kalaman (J Murtagh) 5-2f
3 Martillo (W Mongil) 12-1

Zafeen, who was second in the 2,000 Guineas, comes home first to provide a training success for ex-England and Southampton footballer Mick Channon in the richest race of the day.

Darryll Holland keeps Zafeen out of trouble on the outside and strikes the front after the turn for home.

In the final furlong, favourite Kalaman is blocked amid a bunch of horses and although he runs on strongly, he cannot catch the leader, who wins by a length.

A stewards' inquiry is called to look at the bumping in the latter stages but the winner is unaffected.

1505 King's Stand Stakes
Five furlongs

1 Choisir (J Murtagh) 25-1
2 Acclamation (P Eddery) 16-1
3 Oasis Dream ( R Hughes) 6-1f

Choisir leads from start to finish to score a famous victory for Australia.

The 25-1 shot, trained by Paul Perry near Sydney, holds off Pat Eddery on Acclamation to win the sprint with fast-finishing favourite Oasis Dream in third.

It is the perfect way to bounce back for jockey Johnny Murtagh, who was unseated before the start by his mount in the first race.

1430 Coventry Stakes
Six furlongs

1 Three Valleys (R Hughes) 7-1
2 Botanical (L Dettori) 7-2
3 Privy Seal (J Fortune) 20-1

A successful start to the meeting for trainer Roger Charlton and jockey Richard Hughes, who guides Three Valleys to an impressive victory in the opener.

Favourite Sabbeeh was the early pacesetter but Three Valleys took over at the furlong marker and despite drifting right, the chestnut colt storms home by eight lengths.

The time is just two-hundredths outside of the record, suggesting that the ground is riding fast but also that Three Valleys is a very talented juvenile who will figure in the betting for next year's 2,000 Guineas.

There is drama before the race as Red Power rears up and throws off Johnny Murtagh in front of the stalls - the horse is withdrawn from the race.
