Trainer Paul Perry (r) shows his delight after Choisir's win |
Australian trainer Paul Perry landed a major overseas coup by landing Tuesday's King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. Sydney-based Perry became the first Australian to train a winner in Britain when Choisir triumphed by a length.
The result will cause a similar stir as when Irish trainer Dermot Weld followed his 1993 triumph at the Melbourne Cup with victory last year.
Choisir, ridden by Johnny Murtagh, led from start to finish to see off the challenge of the fast-finishing Acclamation with the favourite Oasis Dream back in third.
Perry opted to bring the horse to Ascot after the Sars outbreak forced the cancellation of the Krisflyer Sprint in Singapore and his gamble paid off superbly.
"It was a sensational victory - one of the best of my career," admitted the delighted Australian after the race.
"He is a big strong horse and coming up to the race we worked him on the grass and he looked well so we were quietly confident going into it."
They will love this win back home Australian trainer Paul Perry |
Perry said that the victory would mean a lot to horse-racing fans in Australia.
"There are some good sprinters in Australia but he would be one of the picks and as he worked so well the other day, I thought he had a big chance and his 25-1 odds were very generous.
"Horses from this side of the world have won two Melbourne Cups so they will love this back home and it will square things up."
"Many people in Australia will have stayed up late to watch this and we will have made a lot of people very happy.
"People thought we would have a huge task in front of us if we were to win a race at Ascot. We are used to flat courses and not the undulating ones that you get here.

"But the horse has a very placid attitude and he made himself at home in Newmarket in the three weeks coming up to the race and we had no setbacks," said Perry.
Now Perry is not satisfied with just one victory at the Royal meeting - Choisir is also entered in Saturday's Golden Jubilee Stakes where he could come up against Henry Candy's star Airwave.
"He gets in at weight-for-age without a penalty so he should be suited by it, Airwave must be a super filly, but I am sure today's win will have done our fellow good.
"We have been to Dubai, Hong Kong and New Zealand so we have travelled a good bit, but this is a first for us and we will see how he performs on Saturday before deciding whether he stays over a bit longer.
"The world is such a small place now and I am sure we will be back."
