The 28-year-old Ulsterman became the most successful British jump jockey of all time by riding his 1,700th winner on Tuesday.

He overtook Richard Dunwoody's winners record, which had taken 16 years to set, in about half the time.

Now McCoy is focusing on adding to his sequence of seven champion jockey titles and winning the one big race to elude him.

"I'd obviously love to win the Grand National because it's the most famous horse race in the world," said McCoy, who has twice finished third on Blowing Wind in the Aintree marathon.

"Having won most of the other big races, the National would be the one I'd really like to win.

"However, it only comes once a year so it's not going to be easy. I'd also like to be champion jockey until I retire."

Earlier this year, the jockey indicated that, health permitting, his retirement was at least seven years away.

McCoy, answering e-mails from BBC Sport Online users, said Dunwoody sent him a message of congratulations immediately after breaking his record.

"He was genuinely happy for me," said McCoy.

The current champion, known popularly by his initials AP, reached the 1,700 mark with victory on Mighty Montefalco at Uttoxeter.

His achievement has prompted bookmakers to cut his odds from winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award from 100-1 to 50-1.

But he remains an outsider for that honour behind the likes of athlete Paula Radcliffe and boxer Lennox Lewis.
