Islington lands Yorkshire Oaks
Islington, ridden by Kieren Fallon
Islington (right) avenged Kazzia's Oaks defeat
Islington won the battle of the fillies to take the Aston Upthorne Yorkshire Oaks on the second day of York's Ebor meeting.

Kieren Fallon's mount, the 2-1 second favourite, surged clear on the home straight to win the 1m 4f Group One race by five lengths from 16-1 shot Sulk.

In third was 20-1 chance Guadalupe with favourite and dual Classic winner Kazzia edged out into fourth.

Pacemaker Starbourne raced well clear from the stalls with Frankie Dettori's Kazzia pulling along the chasing pack.

The positions were unchanged going into the straight where Islington drew alongside Kazzia before racing away.

Sir Michael Stoute's Islington was well down the field when Kazzia claimed the Oaks at Epsom but hit back to win the Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood earlier this month.

It was another Group One success for the colours of Lord Weinstock, who died last month.

Fallon said: "She is a very good filly and there is more still to come from her."

Islington was installed as 4-1 favourite for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf by bookmakers Coral.

Godolphin's Kazzia, who also won the Sagitta 1,000 Guineas earlier in the year, was troubled by the fast ground.

Frankie wins

She could be now be withdrawn from next month's St Leger, missing out on a chance to land the fillies' Triple Crown.

Dettori bounced back from her disappointing run to win the Scottish Equitable Gimcrack Stakes on Country Reel.

The 3-1 favourite Country Reel held off Mister Links and Membership by half a length and a length to give the popular Italian jockey his first win of the meeting.

But it was not all good news for Dettori, who picked up a one-day for careless riding in the race.

Trainer David Loder said he had Newmarket next in mind for Country Reel.

"He is a nice progressive horse," he said.

"Frankie thinks he should stay at six furlongs for the time being so we will probably think about a race like the Middle Park Stakes for him."
