Hugs Dancer skips to Ebor victory
Hugs Dancer wins the Tote Ebor at York
Hugs Dancer burst clear to win from Pole Star
Hugs Dancer put in a late burst to win the Tote Ebor Showcase Handicap at York.

The 25-1 shot wore down Dawn Invasion on the straight and went clear to score by three quarters of a length from Pole Star.

A neck further back was Mick Kinane's mount Barathea Blazer, with 10-1 chance Dawn Invasion fourth.

Winning the Ebor in the north is like winning the Derby in the south
Jockey Dean McKeown

The 1m 6f contest is Europe's richest handicap, with 175,000 prize money on offer.

From the off, Frankie Dettori's mount Charley Bates raced wide out to the right on its own before drifting over to the inside rail, still several lengths clear.

With three quarters of a mile left to race, the 22-strong field came together with Arabian Moon and Dawn Invasion taking the shoulder of Charley Bates.

But it was Hugs Dancer that emerged from the pack to take the spoils.

The winning trainer James Given said: "Dean gave him an absolutely wonderful ride. The stats told us he couldn't win from there but the horse does not know that.

"It was a long, long way up the straight but he's a gutsy horse and we love him to death."

It was the second Ebor victory for jockey McKeown although his delight was slightly tempered when he picked up a two-day ban for excessive use of the whip on the winner.
